Life hacks have taken the internet by storm, and it’s not hard to see why; they help us out in our everyday life and it’s fun to test them out to see which ones actually work. I have learned the best life hack is to put a fork in the cream of an Oreo so that when you dunk it in milk your fingers don’t get all milky and wet.
It’s especially useful for when I’m binge watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix and am also texting.
Life hacks do not apply only to your daily life anymore, there are also quite a few Netflix hacks too! So that is good news for all of us Netflix addicts. I will list 10 different Netflix hacks and then explain the hack. At the end of this list I will give you the hack I use the most, the one I think is most important, and then the second most important hack.
All I do is sit at home and watch Netflix. – Kyrie Irving
1.I cannot stress this one enough: Rate everything you watch.
Netflix gives recommendations based on your interests and what ratings you give the movies and shows you watch. If you aren’t rating anything then Netflix then the selection they give you isn’t tailored to your specific tastes like it is when you rate everything you have watched. When you start to get frustrated because Netflix isn’t giving you the recommendations that fit your tastes, keep in mind that it is possibly because you are not rating what you have previously watched, regardless of it you liked it or hated it. This really helps make your Netflix experience even better because it is more tailored to you and your specific tastes.
2. Use an extension on Chrome
Download this extension for Google Chrome and unlock even more information and suggestions for Netflix. This adds IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and also adds trailers to the Netflix website. This gives you more of an idea if you will end up wasting your time or not when deciding on a movie or TV show. You may have heard of the Hola extension that can allow you to change your location from the US to the UK to unlock more movies and shows, but be careful about using that. Hola has had some security issues and may not be 100% safe. However, that extension allows you to get more movies and shows; use at your own discretion.
3.Take advantage of hidden codes
The link above will give you all the codes for all the different genres that Netflix has to offer. Go to www.netflix.com/browse/genre/______ and insert your code in the blank part. For example, lets say you wanted to watch a sci-fi horror movie. The code for that particular genre is 1694. So you would type in www.netflix.com/browse/genre/1694 and the genre list will pop up. There are hundreds of different codes for different genres, and using the codes helps you find something you want to watch must faster than just trolling through the main genres categories.
4. Utilize keyboard shortcuts
Some of these shortcuts are pretty well known, but others aren’t as much. Here is a list of different Netflix keyboard shortcuts from the Netflix website:
- Space bar: play/pause
- Enter: play/pause
- Page up key: play
- Page down key: pause
- F key: full screen
- Esc key: exit full screen
- M key: mute on or off
- Shift + left arrow: rewind
- Shift + right arrow: fast forward
These shortcuts really help out when you are watching Netflix and don’t want to navigate around with your mouse. I use these keyboard shortcuts often and they are very useful and cut down on time.
5. Customize subtitle fonts and appearance
If you are like me, I don’t always watch foreign movies because I have a hard time reading the subtitles and watching the action parts. But when I watch anime on Netflix I rely on using those subtitles, so why not customize it to how you like? Netflix offers subtitle appearance, which allows you to change the font, the font color, and even the shadowing on the subtitles. You can add a background for the subtitles, and can put a window around it, and you can change the size of the font. This really makes your viewing experience YOUR viewing experience because the subtitles are customized to you specifically.
6. Make Netflix HD and set data limits
To make Netflix HD and to set data limits go to your settings then follow these steps: Go to your account, my profile, and then playback settings. From there you can adjust playback settings. You can also set data limits one the same page. Now keep in mind if you go with the highest setting you get the best video quality, but that eats up about 7 gigs an hour, so if you use that high setting make sure you are on Wifi, otherwise you will have a high cell phone bill!
7. Buy Chromecast to stream your computer to your TV
Chromecast is a little streamer that can plug into a HDMI port on your television and you can instantly stream movies or anything from your computer to the TV. You can stream Netflix, Youtube, Amazon Prime movies and shows, anything of the sort. The reason I recommend Chromecast is because it is only $35 and can be found at a Best Buy or Walmart near you. The Chromecast is a good buy, it is pretty reliable, and you can also mirror your computer screen to it and make your TV a monitor. The reason a Chromecast is what I would recommend is that you can do the most with Netflix from your computer, so you can still keep all your extensions and everything. You can even connect your phone or tablet to your TV at well.
8. Use Netflix roulette if you are overwhelmed with too many choices
Netflix Roulette is a website and an app that helps you decide what to watch on Netflix. It is randomized, and you choose what genre you want and what rating you would like, and it does the rest of the work for you. What I really like about it is that you can pick the rating of the movie you want to watch, so you won’t necessarily get a really bad movie. This website is pretty useful on date night when neither of y’all can decide on what to watch, and can also help you watch more movies.
9.Keep up to date on new stuff being added with Instant Watcher
Instant Watcher is a pretty nifty website because it keeps you up to date on what movies are on Netflix, what’s popular on Netflix during the past 24 hours, and gives information on the movies on Netflix currently. You can search a movie and it will give you reviews, awards the movie has won, similar titles that are on Netflix, and even gives you a trailer for that movie. You can also follow them on Twitter and always keep up to date on Netflix movies. I use this website when looking for scary movies because I have seen most of them on Netflix already. I type in a movie I like then look at the similar titles on Netflix.
Buffering drives most of us crazy, and it usually happens right as the killer is about to be revealed or the bad guy is sneaking up on the good guy. Just as we’re leaning forward in our seats that familiar tiny wheel pops up and moves in a circle while the movie buffers. My usual reaction is to curse and walk away from frustration. There might just be a fix for that, however. To access the menu press: (For Windows)shift + alt + left click and for Mac: shift + option + click. From there all you need to do is match up the playback speed with the buffering rate. You can also temporarily lower the quality of your video while it buffers, and once the buffering stops you can raise the quality back up.
I have tried out most of these hacks and they really do work. My personal favorite hack are the keyboard shortcuts because they really are easy to use and they help out with minor little things.
The most important hack on this list is the first one, to rate everything. Rating everything really ensures that the Netflix recommendations are more customized to your likes and tastes. This makes it so that the recommendations you get are much more tailored to you and your specific likes and tastes. While it may not rule out all movies you don’t like or genres you don’t have an interest in, it will rule out most. If movies pop up you don’t like, rate it and Netflix will stop recommending those types of movies to you.
The second most important hack on the list is to give Netflix roulette a shot. You don’t have to use it every time you watch Netflix, but for those times that you are really indecisive on what you want to watch it helps to have the roulette choose for you. When I have tried it out it gave me a pretty decent movie because I entered in what type of movie and rating and it did the work for me.
